Peter Backes, the great-grandfather of Pierson Backes, began practicing law in Trenton, New Jersey in the 1880’s.

Since then, the Backes family has practiced law father-and-son in central New Jersey for four generations.

William Backes, the third generation of his family to practice law in Mercer County, invited his son Pierson to join his practice in 1997. During his career as an attorney, he had the privilege to represent many important institutions in the Trenton area, including St. Francis Hospital and the Catholic Dioceses of Trenton, and took particular pleasure in representing individuals and smaller businesses in his community. He served as a trustee of the Mercer County Bar Association, and gave decades of service as a member of the Board of Directors of Mercer Medical Center.

Pierson W. Backes


Pierson Backes was born in Trenton, New Jersey and is admitted to the bar in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. His undergraduate degree is from Hamilton College (B.A., Honors) and he received his J.D. cum laude from Temple University. He served as a member and editor of the Temple University Law Review. He is a member of the Mercer County Bar Association and New Jersey State Bar Association, and served on the Board of Directors of the New Jersey chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA). He has served on the Board of Directors of the Northeast Organic Farming Association – NJ and Headlong Dance Theater , and is a former member of the West Amwell Township Planning Board. He is a frequent speaker on probate and estate litigation, and the author of the firm’s Probate and Estate Litigation Reader.

Deborah L. Gnatt


Deborah L. Gnatt is admitted to the bar in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She received a B.A. in Psychology with Honors from Douglas College, Rutgers University, and her J.D. from Rutgers Law School – Camden. Deborah practiced as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of New Jersey for over twenty-five years, with a focus on civil rights and employment litigation and EEO matters. Deborah is a member of the Pennington Borough Council and Pennington Planning and Zoning Board, and a former President and Trustee of the Hopewell Valley Central High School PTO.

Kevin A. Pollock


Kevin Pollock is of counsel to the firm, handling complex estate planning and probate matters. He holds both a J.D. and LL.M. in taxation, and is admitted to the bar in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Florida. He is the author of a widely-read blog concerning tax, estate, and probate matters. He has offices in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, and Boca Raton, Florida.
